Professor Esener interests focus on utilizing novel nanotechnology approaches for cancer imaging and therapeutics as well as optical data storage and nanophotonic sensors. He has made pioneering contributions in photonics to light modulation, detection and amplification, heterogeneous integration of opto-electronic components, optical data storage, and optical interconnects.
In the area of biophotonics he has made important contributions to gene chip development, optical cell sorting, and light tweezer systems for handling and characterization of biological entities. He is currently working on developing multifunctional nanoparticles for image guided drug delivery and cancer monitoring.
Professor Esener is a co-founder of several San Diego-based companies including Call/Recall Inc., Nanogen, Genoptix, OMM, Orimedix and Ziva Corp. Dr. Esener is a Fellow of OSA.
