As part of the 16th annual MLK Celebration, the MLK Youth Scholarship Awards recognized high school students throughout the Austin area for significant accomplishments. At this years program they presented the Applied Materials Youth Legacy Awards and the Seton Family of Hospitals MLK Youth Achievement Awards. RJ received the Seton Family of Hospitals MLK Youth Humanitarian award.

The Youth Humanitarian Award was defined as an individual who embodies the spirit, values and philosophy of Dr. King. Nominees for this category were evaluated as follows:

  • The student should have been involved in activities or other organized efforts in their school or community that have facilitated inclusion and understanding among people of different religious faiths, ethnic backgrounds and racial groups. The student also demonstrated a passion for fairness and justice and compassion for others in need;or
  • The student was involved with efforts that contributed to the improvement of the quality of life for individuals who have been displaced in our communities. For example, provided support and services to individuals displaced by hurricanes or other disasters/events.

The ceremony in its entirety was very moving.

While we are excited for RJ receiving this award, all of those nominated were truly inspirational and RJ is truly blessed to have been nominated amongst them. Way to go, RJ!
